Some of us know of ‘the drawer’. It’s the place where we put our thoughts, our experiences, our feelings and most importantly, moments in our lives. Often times, ‘the drawer’ contains things we consider ‘nothing’ but actually, that ‘nothing’ can be valuable and extremely rare, at least for many of us.
My first drawer was created at the age of 9 – when I had my first private room. In that drawer was my first diary, I wish I could find that diary today.
When I was writing, I was writing mostly (but not only) to ‘the drawer’. There were times when I wrote in a diary format, about my daily life. There were times I wrote stories; stories filled with adventure, fictional stories, reality based stories, but mostly I think my stories were a combination of them all. I wrote them and then put them to rest in ‘the drawer’.
I admit to thinking about doing something with my writing- maybe become a writer or a journalist, but I never did anything about it. I don’t regret it. I did the right thing, I am not a writer, although I write very well (if I do say so myself) Ever since I was little, upon reading their birthday cards, my mom and sister would shed a tear or two. However, family tears are no way to measure writing skills or choose a life path, a career, to write for a living. I think doing so would take the essence out of my writing. For most of my life, I thought my writing only belonged in ‘the drawer’ but now I want to open my drawer to you. I’m hoping you will create your own drawer and then open it and share it with me.
So join MyDrawer. We can open our drawers- share our thoughts, our emotions, our lives. We can create a community. I’ve been doing this for the last 26 years. My drawer has been part of a lifelong journey. Opening my drawer just feels right. Maybe it’s because I want to hear what others have to say, or how people react to my writing. Just the thought of opening myself , my drawer, to others excites me. So I encourage you, please do the same, let’s discover our drawers together..let the adventure begin.
